Few months ago after I completed my run, my Thai neighbor who sat outside his doorstep waved at me.
Upon greeting him — he showed me something he had just purchased — A new brand of a Protein shake.
It looked rather attractive with his bright & professional packaging. Apparently this new protein shake had vitamins, minerals, fats, creatine and everything else you could think of for good health.
However, what my neighbor wanted to bring to my attention was the picture of the model showing his and his girl-friends 6-pack abs.
My neighbor let me know that this new blend would help him build rock-hard muscle, increase his stamina, decrease his body fat & get him in shape within 3 months. ONLY 3 months. And he asked me if I too wanted to get in shape, enjoy having a toned body, increase my stamina & yes, get to show off my 6-pack-rock-hard abs.
Having been a Bodybuilder, Powerlifter, Half-marathoner & Triathlete in my younger days who experimented with everything from Supplements, SARMS, Steroids, Nutrition & everything else in between — I declined.
My neighbor laughed and gave me the smug reaction that let me know “you are stupid to say no” and then he proceeded to drink his amazingly delicious protein shake.
In the next few days, almost every time I passed by — I would notice my neighbor drinking his super nutritious, super healthy & super amazing protein shake. It looked like day and night the only thing he was consuming was the protein shake. So I just casually asked him if that was the case. To my surprise he let me know that he was indeed drinking only this the whole day long as he loved the drink, he was losing weight rapidly and he wanted to achieve his results super fast.
I just kept kept quiet and wished him all the best.
Today when I complete my run and pass by my neighbor, he is busy smoking his cigarette and drinking his Singha while he relaxes on the porch. I do not ask him about his Protein shake because I know exactly what is the state of affairs of this venture of his. The Protein shake must be lying in some corner of the house. He must be fed up of drinking it every single day to the point now he is disgusted by it. And now he has gone back to being ‘normal’.
This is how people generally are.
They start out with a new change with excitement, with enthusiasm and high energy. They go balls-to-wall with their new found sense of purpose. And they push themselves to the limits — only to one day lose the steam, the drive and the desire to continue on that path.
Reason?
What they are doing is not what they really want, who they really are and what truly defines them. All these activities were just a new change they tried to implement in their lives but it proved futile — simply because it wasn’t who they were.
Yes, it does feel nice to see 6-pack-rock-hard-abs, a toned body and incredibly strong body. But if it is not part of your DNA, if it not what constantly rewards you and if it is not what you progressively move forward with, having the right systems, the right people and the right supportive environment — the chances of you continuing the journey will prove seemingly less likely. I know this more than anyone else because I have experimented many new changes in my life only to give up whatever it is I just started.
If you want to make a change in your life — it can only happen if you do the following:
- Have something you give up
- Have the right systems in place
- Have the right supportive groups
- Have the right incentives
- Have incredible pain associated to your failure
- Have incredible pleasure associated to being successful
- Have a constantly evolving game plan
- Have a clear vision
- Understand the WHY of things
Once you get these ingredients in place — anything you do will remain a constant and become a lifestyle. Otherwise, it will just be another protein shake, another treadmill, another fat loss machine or supplement that you buy from the store only to remain in the house and now catch dust.
I know because I have enough and more stuff in my basement that I now need to get rid off…..maybe in the next few days.
